“This chapbook is a delight, these little windows of yours inviting us to see through into the clarity of sorrow, surrender, and joy. “

Patrick Lane – winner of every major literary prize in Canada, author 24 books of poetry, one memoir, one book of short fiction and one novel.

About Where The Water Lives

During  a writers’ retreat in 2009 Patrick Lane asked the retreatants to write a short image poem each day. A kind of piano exercise he called it. That’s when I wrote this small poem Cathedral:

The ocean sounds
its Gregorian chants
to a congregation
of crows, tidal rocks
and a heron, the small fish
dangling.

Lane’s point in getting us to do this was to pay attention to the “little” things around us, to capture a moment of attention. But it was also for us to discover that in most cases a metaphor will develop in these small poems and make them something more.

The retreat was held at the start of the Christian season of Lent and because I so enjoyed writing these small pieces I decided to make them a Lenten practice and wrote one everyday – about thirty five of them!

And after that I continued to write these small poems but more sporadically. Eventually I had enough of them to chose from to make a small book.

Thanks to Ursula Vaira, publisher of Leaf Press, in Nanaimo, here it is: Where the Water Lives.
